Last Friday afternoon 22 of Hawley Place’s finest distance runners made the short trip to Lord Wandsworth College to compete in the annual ‘Millennium Cup’, which is organised by Grey House School.
The U9 girls were the first off and had a great start, all in the leading group ensuring that Hawley Place finished 2nd in the team event. The U9 boys were next off, running the same distance as the girls. True to form the group took off like greyhounds and Oliver stuck with the leading few runners on the first lap, then pushed hard on the 2nd lap to moving into the lead and finish 1st. The rest of the team worked well together in the middle of the field of runners and finished within strong positions.
The third race of the day was the U11 girls, this was over the longer 1800m course (3 laps). We have an extremely talented group of girls in this age group so expectations were high. The girls did not disappoint and worked hard to stay with the front group. A truly magnificent team performance resulted in winning the U11 girls team event.
Finally it was the turn of the U11 boys, also running 3 laps (1800m) and finishing 3rd overall in this event.
The decision for the overall champions couldn’t have been any closer. Hawley Place were tied on points with Elvetham School, however as they had won 2 of the team events to our 1 they were awarded the Millennium Cup on count back. Therefore we finished 2nd overall however we’ll be back next year!
