The weather gods are obviously athletics fans, as the previous day saw some of the strongest wind and heaviest rain this year. Luckily the clouds parted and the sun shone for the ISA London West Regional Athletics Championships on 7 June.
Our team reflected the growing popularity of this event, with 55 of our pupils competing among over 1000 competitors from 28 schools across the region. As ever this made for a timetable that was jam-packed, with five events going on at a time, throughout the day.
With pupils from Years 3 through to 10 this event is fairly unique and gave our own pupils time to make new friends and meet others from another part of the school.
Hawley Place has a highly successful day winning 21 medals in total, which were:
Bertie who flew like a rocket round the 150m sprint to take the win for the year 6 boys event, in 22.0 seconds. In the Year 5 boys 600m, Oliver continued his undefeated record on the track with his third 600m title at this event, smashing the record in the process and clocking an unbelievable 1min 50.8. In the Year 9 girls Long Jump Yasmin continued arguably her most successful season of athletics, with another victory and another record. This time the distance 5.21m. Our final gold of the day was delivered by our year 5 boys relay team (Javier, James, Oliver and William), who combined their speed with slick baton changed to take the victory.
In the year 5 boys 600m James ran superbly to win his heat and finishing in 1min 55.9 which made him the record holder momentarily, until Oliver ran in the second heat. In his first ever Shot Putt competition Enan secured silver in the year 6 boys event with a putt of 6.32m. Bertie leapt to a height of 1.25m in the year 6 High Jump, narrowly missing out on the title due to a ‘jump off’ with another athlete. In the Year 9 girls High Jump, Caitlin continued her good form with a PB of 1.40m, great jumping! Having just arrived fresh from her German GCSE and with very little warm up Gabby managed a distance of 8.72m in the Triple Jump. In the Year 10 girls event Tanya took the silver in both the 100m (13.7) and the Long Jump (4.41), great work!
In the Year 4 boys 60m sprint Oliver took bronze in 9.6 secs. James took yet another medal this time in the Year 5 boys Long Jump with 3.91m. Alesha ran well in the Year 9 girls 200m in 28.3 secs with Isabelle also going well in the 1500m in 3mins 37. Gabby secured her second medal of the day in the Year 10 Girls 200m with a run of 29.1. William performed well in both the 150m (23.8) and the cricket ball throw (39.80m) to win two bronze medals. The final bronze medal was won by our Year 4 boys relay team (Lucas, Oliver, Louis and Lewis M) in a time of 66.4 secs.
A special mention has to go to Lucas who was ‘spiked’ in the first 50m of his 600m race which resulted in one of his running spikes coming off and he ran almost the entire race with one shoe on. A great display of determination.
A massive well done to all our athletes as they demonstrated our school value of family through cheering for one another, respect through shaking hands with their competitors and excellence through their performances.
