Birds of Prey VisitOn Thursday 1st July, the children from Nursery to Year 6 had an exciting day when Hilltop Birds of Prey visited. The children had the opportunity to have their photograph taken with Polo the Barn Owl and then had a very interesting talk about the birds that Mike had brought with him. These were; another Barn Owl, a Little Owl, Snowy Owl, Tawny Owl, Peregrine Falcon Buzzard and a Harris Hawk. |
KS2 trip to Paris and Boulogne-Billancourt 23rd-25th June 2010
At the Eiffel Tower, we met children and teachers from our partner school, École Albert Bezançon, and we queued together to go right to the top of the Tower – The views were amazing! After a long wait for the coaches, we left for Versailles. Unfortunately, we could not go inside the château because of a strike (protesting against the raising of the pensionable age), but we were given an interesting and informative tour of the gardens. In the blistering heat, the ice creams had never tasted so good! Liz Willey |

ENGLISH SCHOOLS SWIMMING ASSOCIATION – NATIONAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS RELAY SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPSSATURDAY 19TH JUNE 2010PONDS FORGE - SHEFFIELDThe girls had made it through the Divisional Round in 2nd position to Locks Heath in the medley relay and now faced their biggest challenge, the best junior schools in the country in the National Relay Championships. We had to wait until the second half of the programme for the medley relay. The team were Alexia (backstroke), Chloe (breaststroke), Leigh (butterfly), and Hannah (front crawl). We were in the 2nd heat of three heats. There were 8 in each heat, with 8 going through to the A final and the next 8 into the “B” final. The backstroke leg is all important as it sets up the team. A good start is vital. Alexia had worked on her starts and finishes and in a personal best time of 18.55 (my manual split). Chloe dived in 4th and had to at least hold her own against tough opposition. Some training on Chloe’s starts worked and a good time of 21.03 set up Leigh to make ground on the other teams. Leigh dived in 4th and made up to 2nd position to hand over to Hannah. An electric take over and a very fast crawl leg with a time of 14.74 gave us 2nd in the heat. Following the 3rd heat we made it through to “A” final in 4th position. We would have to do something special to medal. In the final Alexia repeated her very fast swim from the heat, and improved her PB to clock 18.41. Chloe was really fired up for the final and also improved to record her breaststroke time of 20.83. However, when Chloe handed over to Leigh, we were in 5th position, a lot to do. Leigh clawed back to draw up to level 4th when Hannah dived in. Hannah swam neck and neck with the swimmer from Central Newcastle School but was pipped into 5th place. Leigh’s time was15.86, and Hannah’s time was 15.06. Our time of 1.10.30 in the heat and 1.10.58 in the final exceeded our divisional time of 1.13.83 in April and 1.14.02 in the Hampshire round in March. The times in the Nationals meant that we were the fastest team in Hampshire. The swimmers can be immensely proud of their achievements. I do want to make a special mention to Hannah who not only swam through considerable pain, she showed an absolute focus and determination to not allow her foot injury to prevent her from representing her school in this National Final. Well done to a very brave Hannah and well done to all the swimmers. Mr Rowley June 2010

Year 4 Build a Tudor House Workshop24th June 2010On Thursday 24 th June, the children in Year 4, with the assistance of Charlie from ‘Build a Tudor House’, became Tudor Craftsmen for the day as part of their History course. During the day, they built a Cruck frame house, wove wattle frames and then filled one in with daub, (which was very messy), bodged wooden frame fixing pegs and were tilers and thatchers. This culminated in the building of a 1/3 rd scale Tudor box frame house. This was a fantastic learning experience which was enjoyed by all of the children, which made what they had been learning in class come alive.

Dear Parents and Former Staff,
The words “Thank you” seem to be totally inadequate for the warmth, affection and kindness shown to me on Wednesday 16 th June.
The Whitebeam is lovely and when planted in my garden will be a constant reminder of the many enjoyable years that I spent in the Senior School and the short but happy time in the Junior School.
Your generosity with my other farewell gift was both unexpected and overwhelming.
I have many treasured memories of Hawley Place but this day, like the opening of the Gaskill Building, is very special to me.
My sincere thanks once again.

23 June 2010 Dear Members of the HPPA,
What an incredible week this has been – the wonderful concert and Garden Party on Wednesday 16 th June, with some lovely gifts to me from parents and pupils and then, at the Summer Ball, another unexpected surprise.
The gift you chose could not have been nicer. I do love a touch of luxury now and then, and I can assure you that the Afternoon Tea, wherever we choose to go to take it, will be savoured and enjoyed to the full.
I have had a long association with the HPPA since its conception in the early 1970s (if my memory serves me correctly), and have benefited from and loved being part of the many of the things you do.
My thanks once again.
Yours sincerely
Delia Gaskill

REPORT
Following the senior girls successes of the District Athletics Competition in May, it was going to interesting to see how our 70 strong junior and senior team fared against the 17 other schools in the London West region.
Some of the athletes had received the benefit of extra training at the Military Stadium during the term. As the results show, this training, both track and field had proved beneficial.
Our sprinters and middle distance runners took the lion share of the success, both from the senior and junior school. There were some memorable victories from Melissa Hutt (year 4 girls 600m), Harry Gardner (year 4 boys 600m), Lois Beattie (year 8/9 girls 800m), to name but a few. A fantastic surprise for Lucie Lawton, year 10 girls 1500m, as by coming 2nd qualified for the Nationals. Not bad after a couple of runs at the Military Stadium. What would she have done if she was fit?
In the sprint department, a brilliant duo from year 4, Georgia Pearson and Harry Gardner both won their 60m sprint, with a lot to spare. I said to both of them, run 100m fast in training and you will find 60m a breeze! In the senior school, Courtney Smith, having come 4th in the districts, made up for by storming to victory in the year 8/9 girls 100m.
In the relay department, we had never come 1st in any year group, junior or senior. That is now history, as the year 4 girls of Ceryn, Chloe, Melissa and Georgia ensured they booked their ticket with some speedy runs and slick change overs.
These are our National Qualifiers. A brilliant well done to all these high achievers. (The 1st and 2nd places in the middle distance events qualify for the Nationals).

Hawley Place School Vocal Group ‘hpuk’ trip to Oberursel, Germany - 28 May to 1 June 2010
Pupils and staff from Hawley Place School travelled to Germany at the invitation of the Rushmoor and Oberursel Town Twinning Associations to perform in the ‘Oberursel Brunnenfest 2010’. The pupils performed a variety of solos and duets as well as a programme of whole group numbers including pop, show and folk songs at the open air festival in Rushmoor’s German twin town. The combination of the excellent German hospitality, enthusiastic audiences, and mainly sunny weather helped to make the trip a great success. On Saturday morning we were given an interesting guided tour of the historic town and on Sunday morning several pupils took part in the schools’ fun run. Apart from our seven performances at the festival, we were also able to visit one of the secondary schools in the town to meet pupils, perform to them and experience one of their lessons. We even had some time for relaxation: shopping in Frankfurt and using the leisure facilities at the very comfortable Movenpick Hotel where we stayed. We are very grateful to Alison Boukhobza and Rainer Hoffmann from the two town twinning associations for their support and for all their hard work in organising such a wonderful and worthwhile trip. The pupils (Hannah, Laura, Jo, Charlotte, Zoe, Maddie, Jessie, Rachael, Alex, Beth, Lilia & Arianna) who are all aged 13 to 15 commented: ‘It was the best school trip ever & it has taught me how to become a better performer’, ‘I met lots of different people & learnt different ways of life. It was a great experience.’, ‘I loved seeing how the cultures are different & the trip brought us together as a team’, ‘My best things were performing on the different stages & speaking in German’, ‘The trip was amazing! We had so much fun & I became closer to people so they all became like my best friends’. The pupils were accompanied by four members of staff: Sharon Price (Head of Senior Music), Gerry Thomson (Head of German), Freyja Sculpher (Temporary Music Teacher & professional vocalist), and Liz Willey (German Teacher & Town Twinning Association member). All the pupils and staff feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to take part in such an exciting town twinning venture. Performing alongside musicians from Oberursel and their twin towns is an educational experience which they will never forget.

Aldershot & District Schools Athletic Association – Senior boys and girls Track and Field District Championships – Monday 17th May 2010 – Palmer Park Reading
I chose a strong u/15 girls track and field team to compete at this years championships. Some of these athletes did very well in the junior district championships last year. It would be interesting to see how they fared at senior level. We also had some u/17 athletes, few in number but worthy competitors in their specialized events. In these championships, to score a point for your school, a placing of sixth or better was required. These are the athletes that scored points for the school;
U/15 girls Ellie Bollons – 1st - 800m All these athletes received commerative certificates for being placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd. All these other girls scored points for the school, Amber Try – 4th – Hurdles Going into the final event, the 4x1 relay, Hawley Place u/15 girls team were tying with Robert Mays. The girls did extremely well to come 4th in the relay and came 2nd overall. A fine achievement. A collective WELL DONE to all the athletes who represented their school. Our strength in track and field is growing year on year and we look forward to the junior championships for years 7 and 8 on Thursday 24th June, again at Palmer Park in Reading. Mr. Rowley |
ENGLISH SCHOOLS SWIMMING ASSOCIATION – PRIMARY SCHOOLS RELAY SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS Report Following our recent success in the Hampshire round of these championships, the swimmers knew that they had to push themselves even harder in this Divisional round (best teams in Hampshire, Sussex and Dorset), if they were going to make the Nationals in Sheffield on Saturday 19th June. The top two from every event qualified for the Nationals. The boys team were unchanged from the Hampshire team, Oliver Broad, Charlie Catterall, Thomas Leadbetter, and George Bainbridge. The boys medley was the first race. A time of 1.21.20 secured a place in the final. There was a very impressive fly leg from Oliver Broad and a much improved breaststroke leg from George Bainbridge. A final position of 4th in a time of 1.21.07 was commendable given the tough opposition. The girls team saw one change, Chloe Milne coming in for the injured Hannah Archer. The other three swimmers were Leigh Beale, Alexia Debenham and Catherine Moore. In the girls medley heat, the girls came 3rd and went into the final knowing that a final push was needed to secure a place in the nationals. We were behind after the back and breast legs, but a fast fly leg by Leigh and an amazing f/c finish by Alexia booked the girls a ticket to Sheffield. Alexia dived in 4th as Leigh finished the fly leg. It was almost as if she was accelerating up the lane and in the final 7 metres overtook two teams to touch for glory. In the freestyle races, the boys posted a good time of 1.08.87 to get the boys into the final, but despite a heroic effort by Oliver in the last leg in the final he could not make up enough to put the team into a medal winning position. The boys came 5th in the final. The girls found the final of the freestyle very tough. All girls gave their all but when Leigh dived in for the last leg she had too much to do and finished 4th in the final. However, a fortuitous disqualification meant that the girls, although not reaching the nationals, were lucky enough to go home with another medal, this time the bronze in the freestyle relay. Well done to all the swimmers, well done Hawley Place! Mr. Rowley
