ISA Netball

On Wednesday 24th March Hawley Place School entered an under 11's and under 13's team in the national ISA Netball tournament in Rugby. We had a fantastic day. This was the second year that we had entered and both teams played well. After completing the sectional round robins both teams missed out on entering the main competition and entered the Plate competition. The under 11's won 8-0 in the quarter finals but lost in the semifinals of the Plate by 1 goal. The under 13's team also entered the Plate competition. After a couple of outstanding matches they eventually got to the final of the Plate and won it by 1 goal!

The competition was very tough throughout but this was a fantastic result for both teams.

England Netball Match

On Tuesday 23rd February 46 girls from Years 5-10 went up to the O2 Arena in London to see the England netball team play Australia in the final match of The Co-operative International Netball Series. England and Australia had won one match each and so this was the deciding match.
We were seated very close to the court side and had an excellent view of one of the goal thirds.  England was leading all the way throughout the match and maintained a very close lead until the last two minutes of the match and unfortunately lost 45-43. It was an exciting match and the girls ensured that they cheered loudly for the England team.
The standard of play at International level is outstanding and the accuracy of passing and movement down the court was a delight to see.  When asked what the girls thought Katie Humphrey commented, “It’s so fast and they are so tall!”
It was a pleasure to take all the girls on this trip and allow them to see their country playing netball.

Senior School Activities Days Production
GLEE 2010
Produced & directed by David Shaw

The pupils worked hard to put on a production in two days!
The press & front of house team designed and organised tickets, programmes, photos and reports.
The catering team planned, organised and cooked lunches for all the staff and pupils, and provided and served refreshments to the audiences.
The set, costumes and make-up team created the stage back drop, made and organised costumes and assisted back stage.
The tech team operated the lighting and sound equipment.
The cast rehearsed their singing, dancing and acting for two days and then performed in two shows.
Well done to everyone! It was a fantastic team effort resulting in a fabulous show!

Here is what some of the pupils said:
‘I have learned that if you set your mind to it you can do anything you want to…. I found it very tiring and it took a lot out of me but every minute was worth it!’ (Annabel Yr 7)

‘If I could sum up my thoughts in one word it would be 'Fantastic'’ (Holly Yr 7)

‘I think that everyone was "forced" to work in a team so everyone co-operated really well. I would love to do something like this again.’ (Rachel Yr 7)

‘Exhausting and fun.’ (Caitlin Yr 8)
‘Fun, fun, fun and very worthwhile!’  (Laura Yr 8)
‘David Shaw was an amazing person to work with. He made the workshops really fun and he challenged us with what he gave us to do.’ (Zoe Yr 10)
‘I really enjoyed doing Glee. I have absolutely loved working with David. He is really inspiring & an amazing teacher. We’ve all had a good laugh as well.’  (Hannah Yr 10)
Glee was such a great experience, especially working with someone like David who has had so much experience in the industry! I would love to do something similar again. (Hannah Yr 11)

HAWLEY PLACE NATIONAL ISA FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT
5 March 2010

On Friday 5 March, Hawley Place A and B teams took a coach to Sudbury in Suffolk to play in the 5-a-side National ISA football tournament.  The weather was perfect – sunny and cold.  There were 24 teams split into 4 leagues.

Hawley A (0) v St Nicholas (0)
Hawley A played the first game.  Daisy and Chris were quick to get a touch on the ball.  Jake made an early save.  Harry H took a run to an open goal, which went wide.  Chris had another go at goal, and Daisy took a free kick which went to a corner.  Thomas took a hit on the side of the face but kept going.  The Hawley team did well to keep the score 0-0.

Hawley B (0) v Colchester (1)
Colchester were quick to get a goal in this match.  Michael was kept very busy and stopped several other goals.  George backed Michael up well in defence.

Hawley A (1) v Hull (0)
Hull’s first strike at the goal went wide.  Hawley passed well in this match.  Jake made another good save.  The pace was very fast.  Chris passed the ball to Daisy who made a fabulous strike at the goal showing great pace, and the ball ended up in the net.  Ragan battled well in this game.

Hawley B (1) v Rosemead (0)
A good defensive game by the Hawley side.  Sam J took a free kick, which was a good effort but slightly wide.  Charlie C nearly scored again.  The boys passed well between them, and Jack B was able to score a great goal lifting the B team’s spirits.

Hawley A (0) Lingfield (1)
Hawley started well, with Thomas being strong in defence.  Lingfield managed to score, however, in the left hand corner of the goal.  Hawley were awarded a late penalty shot which Harry H took – he struck it well but the Lingfield goalie was very able and stopped it in its tracks.

Hawley B (0) v Stoke College (1)
Michael did well to stop the first goal from Stoke and got his fingertips on the ball but Stoke still managed to finish the ball off.  Alex had a go at goal which was just wide, and Sam had another go, but it wasn’t going to be a win for Hawley this game.

Hawley A (0) v Gateway (2)
Jake made another good save but Gateway got an early goal which made the Hawley side wobble and panic.  Daisy took a free kick which was a good attempt and led to a corner.  Gateway got the ball off Hawley quickly and charged down the field to an open goal which went wide.  But they came back with a fantastic goal and the Hawley side’s heads went down for the rest of the match.

Hawley B (0) v Sherborne (2)
Sherborne’s number 10 got an early goal.  Sam took a free kick – which went wide.  The second Sherborne goal was unstoppable and went through Michael’s legs.  A fast paced match and although Hawley passed well, they could not finish the ball into the net.

Hawley A (2) v Heathfield (0)
Fast paced match with all Hawley players passing well.  They were in fighting form and it was only a matter of time before they scored.  Chris took a free kick early on, and Daisy struck the ball at the net which came off a Heathfield player to make the first Hawley goal.  The next Hawley goal came off Daisy’s boots again when she struck at the bottom right hand corner of the net.  Daisy and Harry G were passing well throughout the match.

Hawley B (0) v Beech House (0)
Charlie had a great run at the beginning of the match, but the Beech House goalie intercepted the ball to stop him in his tracks.  Beech retaliated by having a go at goal and hitting the bar.  Charlie had another strike at goal but the goalie was there.  Michael did some good saves and did well to keep the score a draw. Charlie came off in the last minute with an injury.

At this point both teams had played 5 matches a piece.  We then heard that Hawley A were through to the Cup (a first for the School) and that the B team were through to the Plate.

The last 2 matches were well fought by both teams.
Hawley A (0) Howe Green (2)
A brave attempt by the A team.  Harry G and Jake played a good defensive game.  Howe Green were a very strong side, however, and were hungry for a win.  They struck two goals in quick succession which would have been three had Daisy not stopped the ball in time.

Hawley B (0) Licensed Victuallers (1)
Hawley B played at the same time as the A team.  They had a hard match with LV scoring the only goal of the match.

Well played Hawley!

Sister Act Report- 23/02/10

On 23rd February 2010 the GCSE music groups from Year 10 and 11 had a chance to see Sister Act at The Palladium, West End. We travelled up to London after school and waited eagerly for half past seven to come so the show would start!
The show was a great learning experience for us as in the music GCSE learning about musicals is a main section so going to see a West End show such as Sister Act was a great opportunity. All of us really enjoyed it as the music was incredible and the show was extremely humorous.
We would all like to go back again and see it as it was one of the best musicals any of us had ever seen and we all really enjoyed it!
Kelly-Ann Rogers (Year 11 Music Prefect)

Music Competition 2010

On 22nd February 2010 the final of the music competition took place in the Millennium Hall. We had four brilliant judges: Ben Gaunt, Emma Morganti, Freyja Sculpher and James Mitchell. The competition was organised by the Music Prefects and it was a huge task but in the end it turned out to be brilliant evening and a great experience. The winners were as follows:
Infant: Lauren Dollimore
Junior: Dance: Maria Gregory
Vocal: Alexia Debenham
Instrumental: Elsbeth Riley
Miscellaneous: Lucy Sturton
Senior: Dance: Zoe Woodhams
Vocal: Caris Brooks

Dance Workshops led by David Shaw on 12th February 2010 for year groups 7-11.

On Friday 12th February, West End performer David Shaw visited our school to give a series of dance workshops in preparation for the show we will be performing during the activities days in March.  Years 7-9, then selected performing arts GCSE pupils from Years 10 & 11 all took part in hour-long workshops where we learnt dance routines from Broadway and West End musicals.  Despite the varying dancing ability of the students, everybody really threw themselves into the workshop, and we all managed to have a great time and learn some intricate yet exciting routines.  We would like to thank David Shaw for visiting us, and are really looking forward to his return next month.

Eagle Radio Breakfast Show Trip

On the 9th February 2010, Mrs D’Arcy and I travelled to Guildford (at a ridiculously early time in the morning!) in order to observe the 96.4 Eagle Radio Breakfast Show.  I was able to not only meet the presenters Peter Gordon (PG) and Alex ‘Posh Al’ Minns, but also be given a tour around the studios, and have explained how much work goes into creating the show.

I was also given the opportunity to chat to the presenters about how they reached such a career, and was given some helpful pointers for the future as to which steps I could take to obtain a career in journalism, or the media industry.  Alex gave me an overview of the different programmes and processes involved in organising the show, and sitting in the studio while they were live on air was certainly an exciting experience I shall not forget!

I would like to thank Eagle Radio for allowing me to observe the show, which was an invaluable experience; and would also like to thank Mrs D’Arcy for organising the morning.  I had a brilliant time and after a really interesting morning, even managed to ask for a ‘shout out’ to all the Hawley Place students (particularly the Year 11s, of course!).

Year 10 & 11 visit to Paris

Twenty girls from Year 10 and 11 attended the conference “Your Future in Europe”. This was held at the Palais des Congrès in Paris on 5th February. This attracts students from all over the UK and is now in its 20th year. Speakers such as Dermott Murnaghan, Swami Chakrabati and Vince Cable talked on a range of issues including the EU, Civil Liberties and becoming a student in the Erasmus scheme. With a boat trip on the Seine, shopping on the left bank and a ride up the Eiffel Tower, the girls saw nearly everything a tourist should see in Paris, including Notre-Dame cathedral, the Louvre and La Défense. The trip was rounded off with a coach tour of the city, bringing to an end a really memorable weekend.

Southern Schools Inter Counties Championships
Saturday 6th February 2010

The Southern Schools Inter Counties is a high quality competition which draws selected runners from Schools county competitions in Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, Essex and Kent.

The course was demanding, the distance 4km, over undulating grass, through woods and finishing on a steady incline. The top 6 from each county would be selected for the All England Schools Championships to be held at Heaton Park, Manchester on Saturday 20th March.

The race was a very fast pace, Rebecca Howard, in great form, lead the way for Hampshire. Rebecca finished a superb 4th overall, and 1st for her county and booked her place in Manchester. Ellie Bollons came 43rd and 11th for Hampshire, Freya Davis 67th and 13th for Hampshire. Both gave their all and tremendous experience for both of them.

IAPS Judo Tournament

On Saturday 23rd January, four girls from Hawley Place competed in the IAPS Judo Championships in High Wycombe. In the under 12 year olds, under 32kgs category, Sarah Dailey won Silver. Sarah’s first three fights were all won with fantastic throws and holds. Unfortunately, Sarah was eventually beaten by a girl whom she had beaten in an earlier fight! In the Under 36kg category, Georgia Pearson won the Bronze medal after a valiant effort and some very skilful moves. Later on that day, Year 9 pupils, Leah Blair and Sophie Tepper competed in their category, both securing a convincing 1st place for the second year running. Both pupils have become excellent Judoka and are now the most successful Judoka ever at Hawley Place!

Year 10 & 11 GCSE Music Students visit Abercorn House to share Christmas music with the residents

A selection of the Year 11s and Year 10s were given the opportunity to perform to the welcoming residents and staff of Abercorn House just before the Christmas Holidays. We all had an enjoyable time singing traditional carols such as We Three Kings and O Come All Ye Faithful, which seemed to go down well with the audience! There were some solos from Hannah and Amelia which were lovely and we ended with a joyful unison of Winter Wonderland, during which the residents were keen to join us.  Mr & Mrs Pipe, Mr & Mrs Rogeon-Pipe and Mrs Price came with us and everybody involved had a good time. We thank the residents and staff for their warm welcome and the lovely refreshments they provided for us, and we look forward to performing at Abercorn House again in the future.

‘Hpuk’ perform at Aldershot Conservative Club
On Sunday 13th December, a small group of Year 10 & 11 girls accompanied by Mrs Price and Mrs Cleeve, performed at the Conservative Club in Aldershot. The audience were entertained with a selection of traditional carols, other well known Christmas songs, and a number of pieces from the musical “Chicago”. Despite a few minor mishaps (a microphone falling apart and a soloist falling ill at the last minute!) the performance was a great success and was enjoyed by both performers and audience members. It really was a great experience as we were so warmly welcomed by the members and it helped put everyone in the Christmas spirit.
