On 19th October 2009 the Year 11 GCSE music group went on a trip to Cooper Court in Farnborough to perform. We went to Cooper Court to entertain the residents with a variety of music including songs from musicals, a clarinet piece and a much-loved Beatles song. Each of us did a solo piece along with two group pieces. Hannah sang ‘I’m Not That Girl’ from the musical Wicked and a duet with Kelly-Ann ‘For Good’ also from the musical Wicked. Alex sang ‘Hey Jude’ and accompanied herself on the piano. Nuala performed ‘Evening’ on the clarinet and Kelly-Ann sang ‘Think of Me’ from the musical Phantom of the Opera. All of the pieces went really well and we loved performing to such a wonderful audience.
As well as the solo pieces, we also performed two group pieces: ‘Use Somebody’ and ‘Candles’. After our performance we chatted with our audience and they gave us some valuable feedback and many compliments on our performances. We thoroughly enjoyed going to Cooper Court and performing for the residents there. We would like to thank them for their warm welcome and we hope that we can go back and perform for them again!

On Wednesday 23rd September 2009, Hawley Place Junior Choir went to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking.
When we got to school we were all extremely excited and the lessons seemed to drag, but the coach finally came. We arrived at the Theatre just in time, and as soon as the show started, we were completely absorbed in the story.
The tale of the flying car, its inventor and his children, was very well told. One of the best moments of the first half was the real dogs that were used in the number “Toot Sweets”. It was really cute!
After the interval, the action switched to Vulgaria, with the Baron and his evil wife who hated all children. The Child Catcher scared us all – but Chitty saved the day! Everyone lived happily ever after, and Truly married Caractacus.
All too soon, the cast were bowing and we were cheering and clapping as hard as possible. It was quite sad for us Year 6s, for that was our last show with the Junior Choir. But it doesn’t really matter – we had too much fun to be worried about that!

Eagle Radio's Love crew dropped into Hawley Place on Friday 11th September, giving Ellen and Jess D'Arcy (and their mum, Mrs Lorna D'Arcy) a crew ride to school. Love Crew presenter Smiler introduced the girls on air and they gave a big 'Hello' to all at Hawley Place, then Smiler joined the whole Junior School for a second live link up. This time, pupils raised the roof as they shouted "Good Morning"! Smiler stayed to answer questions and give out car stickers. Hawley Place was the very first school to be mentioned on the Crew Ride this school year.

Following a large amount of international activity during the last school year, we decided to give this event a lower profile than usual.
A special assembly was organized for Friday 25 th September, for which children in Key Stage 2 were invited to supply pictures and flags of their chosen country. They also needed to be able to show the location of that country on a world map, and to teach their peers to say ‘hello’ in the language. We duly greeted one another in French, German, Spanish, Maltese, Urdu, Arabic, Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Punjabi and the native language of New Zealand .
A week before the event, each child had received a quiz sheet, and prizes were awarded to the highest scorers during the assembly.
The children are to be congratulated for their interest and enthusiasm, which is clearly visible from these photos.

We concluded the assembly by singing the hymn Il porte le monde entier dans ses mains (He’s got the whole world in his hands – in French!)

On the 6th of July 2009 the pupils of Hawley Place School went to the Prospect Theatre which is situated in Farnborough Sixth Form College to perform. We were lucky enough to be able to perform with professional singers and performers who have been in West End shows! This was very exciting for us and we felt that we were very privileged to be given this opportunity. Five of us were delighted to be asked to perform solos or duets with a live band. Hannah Cleeve performed ‘Broadway Baby’; Joanna Gregory performed ‘In a Very Unusual Way’, Caris Brookes performed ‘Nothing’ and Charlotte Steele and Hannah Steele performed ‘How the other Half Lives’.
We also performed many group pieces that we were given words for a few days before the workshop to learn. When we arrived in the school hall for the workshop we were inspired by the two professionals who were there to teach us the songs. Their voices were absolutely fantastic and I wish that I was able to sing that well! We learnt songs such as ‘All That Jazz’ from Chicago, ‘Consider Yourself’ from Oliver and ‘Do You Hear the People Sing’ from Les Misérables. We just sang most of them and learnt different parts to all of the songs with harmonies, and in ‘All that Jazz’ we learnt a few actions to go along with it which made it more exciting and interesting to watch.
In the evening when we went to the Prospect Theatre to practise the songs on the stage and get ready to perform we met all of the other professional performers and watched them rehearse. We were mesmerised by how good they were and were really inspired by them. It made us even more excited about performing to our families and friends later in the evening.
We all thoroughly enjoyed performing the group pieces especially ‘Can You Hear the People Sing’ because it gave all those involved a chance to perform together. All of the soloists sang their songs very well and everybody really enjoyed and appreciated the experience that we were lucky enough to be given. We would also like to thank the music department for organising this memorable event for us.

We are much indebted to the Twinning Association of Rushmoor for their generous grant, which helped us to host the children from our link year 6 class this summer. It provided a very special focus for the exchange of correspondence and videoconferences which had taken place throughout the year.
The very excited French children arrived at St Pancras at 9.30am on Monday 22 nd June, having had an early morning start.

Alison Boukhobza and Caroline Taylor from the Twinning Association of Rushmoor were there to greet them, along with Mrs Willey.
Mrs Pipe and Mrs Vango brought the Year 6 Hawley Place children to meet the party for a sightseeing bus tour of London , and it was a delight to see how well the children interacted from the moment they met.
A picnic lunch in St James ’ Park (and a visit to their excellent loo provision) was followed by a pleasant walk through the park to the Horse Guards, where the children enjoyed taking photographs and buying souvenirs.

After all the walking, one might have expected the children to be tired and to sleep on the coach back to school....but NO! The vibrant chatter and buzz of excitement was heart-warming. Some of the more studious types even started to complete the London activity booklet which they had received for the tour!

Back at Hawley Place School , some wonderful parents and staff had been preparing a welcome for our guests, followed by games of cricket and rounders and a family barbecue, at which Mr Pipe presented the children with a Kwick Cricket set for their school, before they departed to their host families.
The French staff were then whisked away by HPS staff with just enough time to witness the final minutes of a cricket match on the green at Yateley, before light stopped play. A combination of the live band, playing some foot-tapping music, and a glass of traditional English Pimms, provided a relaxing half-hour before going home for a good night’s rest.

The first children arrived back in school at 8am the next morning, and normal lessons were held until break, with a maths quiz using the interactive whiteboard, and English activities which involved French and English children working together on a joint project. The teachers had worked hard to provide suitable activities, accessible in both languages, and it was a delight to see how well the children communicated with one another.

After break, the children watched a Science Theatre production in the School Hall and enjoyed a proper English school dinner before gathering their belongings and being transported to the Council Offices to meet the Mayor of Rushmoor.

We received a warm welcome in the Council Chamber, and the children were fascinated by the robes, badge of office and various traditions which are associated with the work of the Mayor of Rushmoor, Cllr Roger Kimber. There was no shortage of questions from French and English children alike, and they were delighted with the friendly and interested manner in which Roger answered them. Our sincere and heartfelt thanks are due to all the Council staff who made our visit so enjoyable.
After a refreshing drink in the adjoining gardens, we made our way to Sainsbury’s for a ‘shopping experience’ (The store had been forewarned!). The children were encouraged to find items which would not be found in a French supermarket.

Then it was time for fond farewells – and yes, there were tears! The coach was waiting to transport the party back to St Pancras.

We waved them off with a mixture of emotions. The time had flown by too quickly, and yet it had met all the objectives we had set out to achieve – Friendships had been forged, cross-cultural understanding deepened and motivation to learn languages more than doubled. If only one thing made it worth all the effort, it was the remark of an otherwise rather disaffected young man, as he climbed out of my car when we returned to school: “Yeah, Madame Willey it’s been a great two days – Thanks for organising it”. Vive l’entente cordiale!
E. Willey
