Junior Curriculum

Our curriculum is broadly based and extends well beyond the National Curriculum. Teaching groups are deliberately small, so that staff can develop a deep understanding of all their pupils. We provide extension work to stretch the most able and learning support for those who need it. We pride ourselves that all children are given encouragement and helped to reach their full potential.

In Reception and Key Stage 1, we develop reading and writing, numeracy, creative talents and social skills. Emphasis is also placed on engendering enthusiasm and curiosity. Children are encouraged to develop tolerance, patience and kindness towards each other and they are introduced to other countries, cultures, and creeds.

Initially class teachers deliver most of the curriculum, ensuring a sense of security for each child. Over the years, specialist teachers for Science, French, PE, ICT, Music, Art and Drama all contribute to enrich the child’s learning experience.

By Years 5/6, most of the curriculum is delivered by specialist teachers, who can give stronger tuition for the more demanding needs of Key Stage 2. Form tutors retain pastoral responsibilities, monitoring progress and reviewing it regularly with parents.

The main aims by this stage are to consolidate and develop the basic work in English and Mathematics, whilst never underestimating the importance that all the other subjects play in the overall well-being and personal development of the child. More time is devoted to French, as languages are seen as essential in today’s modern world of increasing European trade and travel.
