E.S.S.A. South East Division Primary Schools Relay Competition
The top teams from Surrey, Hampshire, Kent, Oxford, Buckinghamshire and Sussex gathered to compete at the Guildford Spectrum for the honour of representing their school at the Nationals in Sheffield on 20th June. The Hawley Place girls were all in good form and had high hopes; they had trained hard and were focused and determined.
In the heats the girls qualified for the final in 2nd place in the medley relay heat and their improved time from the Hampshire round (1.13.76 / 1.16.94) was impressive. Their rivals for the top spot, Battle Abbey Prep from Sussex were unfortunately disqualified in the heat which gave us a fantastic opportunity. The girls swam brilliantly in the final, to come in first in a time of 1.13.74. We were definitely at the Nationals and we still had the freestyle race to come!
In the freestyle we really had to come up with something special to make the Nationals; all the girls had to improve on their already impressive personal bests …… we were lying either 3rd or 4th on the last change over however in the last leg we blazed our way down the lane, touched the wall on 16.47! We came 2nd, recording a 1 1/2 second improvement from the heat.
This event capped a great evening for Hawley Place School, now in the ESSA National Relay Championships in Sheffield in June.
What a magnificent achievement!
