On Tuesday 17 October, our Senior boys played in this rugby tournament for the first time. The competition is aimed at developing the game from tag to contact rugby at Senior School level.
After the journey down to Southampton RFC our boys were keen to get playing rugby for the first time as a team, with some getting their first ever taste of competitive rugby. Each team played group matches in the morning, and the groups were rotated after lunch, with teams facing others of a similar ability.
In our first game, we matched a very strong side from Wyvern and narrowly lost 3 tries to 2. Bertie and Eelis both put their mark on the tournament early showing great running with ball-in-hand and each scoring. Louis and Oliver H also played well putting in some bone-crunching tackles.
Our remaining group matches in the morning led to a 2-0 loss to Brookfield, 2-2 draw with Hounsdown and a 2-1 win against Milton Cross. Johnny and Oliver M were becoming a driving force in the middle of the park with some solid running lines. A full morning session of nail-biting rugby. Eelis led from the front as captain and Bertie put in the hard yards, the two of them scoring all of our tries from the morning. George and Connor all progressed well throughout the morning and were making tackles and showed swift hand skills.
After a lunchtime ‘refuel’ and a changing of the groups our boys were once again eager to play, with our less experienced players now more confident and settled. The positive ‘family’ spirit and determination shone through, leading to a highly successful afternoon. Ioan had gained in confidence and began to make an impact with ball-in-hand, with Alex showing his speed with some nimble line breaks. It was 3 from 3 as the boys turned in three excellent performances against Mayfield (3-2), St Georges (3-2) and Regents Park (4-1). A much-improved team effort with Charlie using his pace and getting on the score sheet and Tom dominating the final game and scoring a hat-trick.
Well done to all the boys involved as they represented Hawley Place fantastically throughout the day.
