On Wednesday 1 November, Hawley’s U11s hosted A and B teams from Barfield.
Hawley B 0 – 4 Barfield B
With none of the squad playing football outside of school, the B team have been working hard on team shape and positioning and, with Barfield boasting two players from their A team, this match wasn’t going to be an easy task, and so it proved. Hawley quickly went 1-0 down, allowing a fluid Barfield attack to cut through and score almost from the off. Kaya then set up Hugo who was unlucky not to score, his effort and work-rate deserving of a goal.
In the second half, Hawley were 3-0 down within three minutes as Barfield cut through at will with Hawley offering little resistance in the way of tackling. Harry and Joshua were keen to try and break up play, but the waves of Barfield attacks continued, and Hawley began to lose their shape before shipping a final goal.

Hawley A 1 – 1 Barfield A
As has been reported before, great things are expected of Hawley Place’s U11 A Team and Barfield A promised to offer a good test.
The first half was fairly evenly contested, but clear-cut chances were few and far between. Charlie H, a constant menace operating in an attacking position on the right, set up George with a good opportunity and the latter, serving as a striker instead of his usual position just behind the front three, squandered a further difficult chance created from a through ball.
In the second half, Barfield quickly scored which shook Hawley as they had arguably had the better of the opening stages. Charlie H then twice set up James – who blazed over and wide – either side of an Ollie shot which flew past the post. Luca was also unlucky to miss from close range when a goal seemed inevitable.
Then Hawley claimed the goal their pressure deserved through a shake-up in positioning. Connor F was brought on in a defensive midfield role and played with great discipline, breaking up Barfield breaks and patrolling just in front of the back three. James subsequently pushed up into attacking midfield and Ollie led the line between Charlie H and Luca. Charlie C won the ball on the left of midfield and quickly fed Ollie, who had dropped deep, and who in turn shipped the ball on to Luca. Luca’s shot was turned wide by the Barfield ‘keeper but Charlie H, showing fantastic awareness, pounced on the ball near the post to prevent it going over the goal-line and neatly turned it back across the Barfield goal for Ollie to smash home.
On balance, one-all was a fair result, on the day, but we still have to see the best from this fine group of players.
